Skin Health, Scarring & Beauty Recovery
Want Your Skin to Heal as Well as You Feel?
Whether you're recovering from surgery, dealing with scarring or exploring ways to support your skin's health and repair, discover how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may support the biological processes involved in healing — personally guided, in our Kildare clinic or from your own home.
Does This Sound Familiar?
When Your Skin Needs More Support to Recover
Skin doesn't always recover as quickly or as completely as we'd like. Surgery, injury, burns, inflammation and cosmetic procedures can all place additional demands on the body's normal healing processes — while scarring, redness or changes in texture can remain long after the initial event.
The Science
How HBOT May Support Skin Repair
Skin healing depends on a coordinated series of biological processes — from controlling inflammation and rebuilding damaged tissue to producing collagen and developing the blood supply needed to support recovering cells.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy significantly increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma. Under pressure, this temporarily increases oxygen availability throughout the body, including skin and underlying tissues. Because oxygen plays an important role in several stages of wound healing and tissue repair, this increased availability may support the environment the skin needs to recover.
Supports Collagen Production
Oxygen is required for collagen synthesis. By significantly increasing oxygen availability during treatment, HBOT may support the fibroblast activity and collagen formation involved in rebuilding skin and connective tissue.
Supports New Blood Vessel Formation
HBOT can stimulate processes involved in angiogenesis — the formation of new blood vessels — helping support the developing microcirculation required by healing tissue.
May Help Regulate Inflammation & Swelling
HBOT can influence inflammatory pathways and mechanisms involved in tissue swelling, potentially supporting the environment in which damaged or recovering skin heals.
Supports Tissue Repair & Wound Healing
By increasing oxygen availability to tissues, HBOT can support oxygen-dependent cellular activity involved in wound healing, tissue repair and recovery.
The Research
What Does the Research Say?
HBOT has a recognised role in certain wound and tissue conditions and has also been investigated as an adjunct around plastic and aesthetic surgery, compromised grafts and flaps, skin repair and ageing. Research into wound and tissue recovery is more established than research into purely cosmetic outcomes such as skin rejuvenation or reducing the appearance of normal scars. Those two areas shouldn't be treated as though the evidence is equally strong.
2026 Systematic Review · Plastic Surgery · 1,281 Patients
A 2026 systematic review examined 18 studies involving 1,281 patients across plastic-surgery applications including wounds, grafts, flaps, infections and limb salvage. The included studies reported favourable outcomes across areas including wound healing and graft or flap survival, with HBOT appearing particularly useful as an adjunct in chronic wounds and compromised tissue.
Important limitation: Two-thirds of the included studies were case series, and study designs and patient populations varied considerably. The authors concluded that further standardised research is needed to define optimal patient selection and treatment protocols.
View the Research on PubMed →Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis · Aesthetic Surgery · 734 Patients
A systematic review and meta-analysis included 11 studies and 734 patients undergoing aesthetic procedures, with 416 receiving HBOT. Across the included studies, HBOT was associated with favourable postoperative healing outcomes and high patient satisfaction. The procedures included abdominoplasty and breast aesthetic surgery, among others.
Important limitation: HBOT protocols and study designs varied substantially. The authors called for well-designed randomised trials before standardised recommendations can be established.
View the Research on PubMed →Prospective Clinical Study · Skin Ageing & Collagen
A prospective study examining skin changes following a course of HBOT found significant increases in collagen density, elastic-fibre length and blood-vessel number, alongside reductions in fragmented fibres and senescent cells in skin biopsies.
Important limitation: Although the wider study cohort included 70 people, the skin-biopsy analysis involved only 13 men, with an average age of approximately 68. It was not a large randomised cosmetic trial, so these findings shouldn't be interpreted as proof that HBOT visibly reverses skin ageing.
View the Research on PubMed →What does this mean for skin health and recovery? HBOT has a credible biological and clinical role in supporting certain wound and tissue-healing situations. There is also emerging evidence around aesthetic recovery, collagen, vascularisation and skin ageing, but the evidence for purely cosmetic outcomes remains more limited. HBOT is best positioned as a potential adjunct to healing and skin health rather than a guaranteed scar-removal or anti-ageing treatment.
Your Guide
Your HBOT Programme, Guided by Davitt Meenaghan
Davitt is an IBUM-certified Hyperbaric Safety Officer. He founded ReWell after seeing too many people buying or renting chambers with little guidance on how to use them appropriately.
For people exploring HBOT for skin, scar or procedure recovery, Davitt considers what you're recovering from, your stage of healing, your goals and any other treatment or aftercare you're receiving. He guides your HBOT use around those circumstances — including session frequency, pressure and pacing — while recognising the importance of appropriate wound, surgical or aesthetic aftercare.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can HBOT support recovery after cosmetic surgery?
HBOT has been studied as an adjunct following aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. Systematic reviews have reported encouraging findings around postoperative healing and certain complications, particularly where tissue healing or blood supply is compromised. However, evidence varies by procedure, and HBOT shouldn't replace the aftercare recommended by your surgeon.
Can HBOT reduce the appearance of scars?
HBOT supports biological processes involved in tissue repair, including oxygen availability, collagen formation and new blood-vessel development. However, there isn't strong evidence that HBOT reliably reduces the appearance of ordinary established scars. Its potential role is better understood as supporting the healing environment rather than as a scar-removal treatment.
Can HBOT improve collagen and skin quality?
There is early human research suggesting HBOT may influence skin collagen, elastic fibres, vascularisation and cellular ageing markers. One prospective study found measurable changes in skin biopsies following a course of HBOT, but the biopsy sample was very small. Larger controlled studies are needed before HBOT can be considered an established skin-rejuvenation treatment.
How many HBOT sessions are needed for skin recovery?
There is no universal number of sessions for skin or aesthetic recovery. Research protocols vary according to the procedure or condition being studied. ReWell guides frequency, pressure and pacing around the individual's circumstances and intended use rather than promising visible improvement after a set number of sessions.
Can I combine HBOT with cosmetic or skin treatments?
Potentially. HBOT has been explored alongside surgical and aesthetic procedures, but appropriate timing depends on the treatment you've had and your individual circumstances. Follow the aftercare advice of your surgeon, doctor or aesthetic practitioner and let ReWell know about recent procedures before starting HBOT.
Is HBOT safe?
HBOT is generally well tolerated but isn't suitable for everyone. Suitability depends on your health history and circumstances rather than your "skin type." ReWell reviews this before starting, and HBOT should not replace appropriate medical or wound care.
