Neurological Recovery & Dysautonomia

Stuck in Survival Mode With No Clear Answers?

If dizziness, brain fog, fatigue or a racing heart are disrupting daily life, explore whether Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy could form part of your wider approach to neurological recovery and wellbeing — personally guided, in our Kildare clinic or from your own home.

Does This Sound Familiar?

It's Not "Just Stress" and You're Not Imagining It

Neurological and autonomic symptoms can affect people in very different ways. Dizziness, changes in heart rate, fatigue, brain fog and difficulty standing or exercising can make everyday life feel unpredictable and exhausting.

Dizziness on standing
Racing or irregular heartbeat
Brain fog & memory lapses
Overwhelming fatigue
Difficulty standing or walking
Disrupted sleep
Unpredictable, fluctuating symptoms
Struggling to keep up at work or home
Dysautonomia is an umbrella term for disorders affecting the autonomic nervous system — the system involved in functions including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion and temperature regulation. Symptoms and underlying causes can vary considerably from person to person, which is why appropriate medical assessment remains important.

The Science

How HBOT May Support Neurological Recovery

The brain and nervous system have exceptionally high energy demands and rely on a continuous supply of oxygen. Following neurological injury or disruption, changes can occur in brain metabolism, blood flow, inflammation and cellular function — all of which may affect how the brain and nervous system operate.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy significantly increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma. Under pressure, this temporarily increases the oxygen available throughout the body, including to brain tissue. That increased oxygen availability may influence several processes involved in neurological function, repair and adaptation.

HBOT is not an established treatment for dysautonomia itself. Neurological and autonomic symptoms can have many different causes, so HBOT should be considered alongside appropriate medical assessment and care.

Supports Brain Oxygen Availability

HBOT substantially increases dissolved oxygen in the blood plasma, temporarily increasing the oxygen available to brain tissue during treatment.

May Support Brain Metabolism

The brain requires significant amounts of oxygen to produce the energy needed for normal cellular activity. Increasing oxygen availability may support metabolic processes in brain cells and areas of tissue functioning under increased demand.

May Support Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to adapt, reorganise and form new connections. Increased oxygen availability under hyperbaric conditions may influence biological processes involved in neuroplasticity and neurological recovery.

May Influence Neuroinflammation

HBOT can influence inflammatory and oxidative pathways. These effects may be relevant where neuroinflammatory processes form part of a neurological condition or recovery response.

The Research

What Does the Research Say?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been studied across several areas of neurological recovery, with a substantial part of the published research focusing on traumatic brain injury and cognitive function. Some studies have reported improvements in certain neurological and cognitive outcomes, while other reviews have found limited or inconsistent benefit.

Research specifically examining HBOT for dysautonomia is much more limited. Findings from traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions therefore cannot be assumed to apply directly to dysautonomia or every person experiencing autonomic symptoms.

2025 Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis · 250 TBI Patients

Researchers analysed four studies involving 250 people experiencing neurocognitive impairment following traumatic brain injury. The pooled analysis reported improvements across several measured areas, including memory, attention, general cognition, executive function, information-processing speed and motor skills.

Important limitation: The evidence base included only four studies. While the randomised studies were assessed as having low risk of bias, non-randomised studies had moderate risk, and the authors concluded that larger trials using standardised protocols are needed.

2023 Systematic Review · Cognitive Recovery After TBI

Researchers reviewed ten studies examining HBOT for cognitive impairment following traumatic brain injury, including six randomised controlled trials and four pilot studies. Results across the studies were mixed, and the review concluded that evidence supporting a beneficial effect of HBOT on cognitive function following TBI remained limited.

Important limitation: The studies differed in their methodology and findings, and the researchers concluded that larger randomised controlled trials are needed.

Systematic Evidence Review · 12 Randomised TBI Trials

This review examined 12 randomised trials of HBOT for traumatic brain injury. Studies involving mild TBI found no statistically significant differences between HBOT and sham treatment, while findings in moderate-to-severe TBI were more mixed.

Important limitation: Results varied according to injury severity, study design and comparison treatment, making it difficult to draw broad conclusions about HBOT for neurological recovery.

What does this mean for neurological recovery? Research into HBOT and neurological recovery is ongoing, with some encouraging findings alongside important limitations and mixed results. Evidence specifically for dysautonomia remains limited, so HBOT should not be presented as a proven treatment for autonomic dysfunction.

Your Guide

Your HBOT Programme, Guided by Davitt Meenaghan

Davitt is an IBUM-certified Hyperbaric Safety Officer. He founded ReWell after seeing too many people buying or renting chambers with little guidance on how to use them appropriately.

For people exploring HBOT alongside neurological or autonomic symptoms, that guidance is particularly important. Davitt considers your health history, circumstances, goals and intended use when guiding session frequency, pressure and pacing, while recognising that HBOT should sit alongside appropriate medical assessment and care.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HBOT proven to treat dysautonomia?

No. HBOT is not currently an established treatment for dysautonomia itself, and research specifically examining HBOT for autonomic disorders remains limited. HBOT is being researched across several areas of neurological health and recovery, but findings from other neurological conditions cannot automatically be applied to dysautonomia.

How is HBOT being studied in neurological recovery?

HBOT increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma. Researchers are investigating whether the increased oxygen availability created under pressure may influence processes including brain metabolism, inflammation and neuroplasticity in certain neurological conditions. Evidence varies considerably according to the condition being studied.

Can HBOT help with brain fog, dizziness or fatigue?

Brain fog, dizziness and fatigue can have many different causes, including autonomic, neurological and other medical conditions. Some neurological HBOT research has reported improvements in certain cognitive outcomes, but there isn't sufficient evidence to promise that HBOT will relieve these symptoms in people with dysautonomia. Appropriate investigation of the underlying cause remains important.

How many HBOT sessions are needed for neurological recovery?

There is no universally established HBOT programme for neurological recovery or dysautonomia. Research protocols vary considerably, and the appropriate frequency and duration depend on the condition, individual circumstances and intended use. ReWell therefore guides the programme around the individual rather than promising results within a set number of sessions.

Is HBOT safe for people with neurological conditions or dysautonomia?

HBOT is generally well tolerated but isn't suitable for everyone, and some neurological or medical conditions require particular consideration. Your health history, symptoms and current care should be reviewed before starting. HBOT should complement — not replace — appropriate medical assessment or treatment.
