Chronic Pain & Fibromyalgia

Tired of Living With Pain That Never Lets Up?

If chronic pain, fibromyalgia or fibro fog have made daily life exhausting, explore whether Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy could form part of your approach to managing symptoms and supporting recovery — with individual guidance, in our Kildare or Dublin clinic or from your own home.

Does This Sound Familiar?

When Chronic Pain Starts Affecting Everyday Life

Chronic pain and fibromyalgia can affect far more than pain levels alone. Sleep, energy, concentration, movement, work and social life can all be impacted — and those effects are very real.

♥Daily pain flare-ups
☾Sleep disrupted by discomfort
◐"Fibro fog" & brain fog
⚡Constant fatigue
●Joint stiffness & muscle tenderness
◎Nerve hypersensitivity
⬡Missing work, hobbies & social plans
◍Feeling dismissed by others
Chronic pain and fibromyalgia are complex conditions involving changes in the way the nervous system processes pain, alongside a range of other biological factors that can differ from person to person. The symptoms are real — they're not weakness, and they're not imagined.

The Science

How HBOT May Support People Living With Chronic Pain

Chronic pain and fibromyalgia are complex conditions that can involve altered pain processing, nervous-system sensitivity, inflammation, reduced exercise tolerance and changes in how the body produces and uses energy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy significantly increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma. Under pressure, this oxygen can reach tissues at concentrations that aren't possible under normal atmospheric conditions. For people living with chronic pain or fibromyalgia, this increased oxygen availability may support cellular energy production, influence inflammatory processes and affect some of the biological pathways involved in pain sensitivity and recovery.

HBOT is not a cure for chronic pain or fibromyalgia and individual responses vary. It is best considered as a potential supportive therapy alongside appropriate pain management and medical care.

May Support Cellular Energy

Oxygen is essential for mitochondrial energy production. By substantially increasing oxygen availability during treatment, HBOT may support cellular energy processes that are relevant to fatigue and physical function.

May Influence Pain Processing

HBOT may influence neurological and cellular pathways involved in pain signalling and sensitivity — an area of particular interest in conditions such as fibromyalgia.

May Help Regulate Inflammatory Processes

HBOT can influence inflammatory and oxidative pathways within the body, which may be relevant where inflammation contributes to pain and tissue sensitivity.

Supports Tissue Oxygenation & Repair

Increasing the oxygen available to tissues may support normal cellular repair processes and tissue recovery, particularly where pain is accompanied by injury or impaired tissue function.

The Research

What Does the Research Say?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been studied as a potential supportive treatment for fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Some published studies have reported improvements in pain levels and quality-of-life measures among participants, though the overall evidence base is still developing. HBOT is not currently established as a cure for fibromyalgia or a replacement for standard medical care, and results vary between individuals.

2023 Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis · 288 Patients

Researchers reviewed nine clinical studies involving 288 people with fibromyalgia. The combined findings suggested HBOT may improve pain, tender points, fatigue, sleep and overall functioning.

Important limitation: The studies used different programmes and varied in quality. The authors concluded that further research is needed to establish the optimal HBOT protocol.

2023 Meta-Analysis of RCTs · 163 Participants

This analysis looked specifically at four randomised controlled trials. HBOT was associated with improvements in fibromyalgia impact scores and tender-point counts. When pain was analysed separately, the pooled improvement was not statistically significant, and side effects were more common with HBOT.

Important limitation: Only four RCTs were available, involving relatively small numbers of participants.

2020 Randomised Clinical Trial · 49 Women

This study compared low-pressure HBOT, physical exercise and a control group in women with fibromyalgia. Both HBOT and exercise improved several measures of physical function. Perceived pain and induced fatigue improved significantly only in the HBOT group.

Important limitation: This was a small study involving only women, so larger trials are needed before results can be generalised.

A 2026 systematic review of 11 randomised trials and 480 participants across chronic pain conditions similarly concluded that HBOT shows potential as an adjunctive treatment — particularly for fibromyalgia — while highlighting inconsistent results, risk of bias, varying programmes and limited long-term follow-up. A More Individual Approach to Chronic Pain & Fibromyalgia

Davitt Meenaghan is the Founder and Director of ReWell and an IBUM-certified Hyperbaric Safety Officer. His wider work is informed by functional medicine, biohacking and longevity, with a particular interest in how individual biology, lifestyle and emerging health technologies such as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can work together to support health and recovery.

That individual perspective is particularly relevant when someone is living with chronic pain or fibromyalgia. Pain rarely exists in isolation — sleep, fatigue, brain fog, movement, stress, inflammation and nervous-system sensitivity can all shape how someone feels and functions from day to day. Davitt's approach is therefore not to treat a diagnosis as a standard HBOT problem, but to understand what you are experiencing, why you are exploring HBOT and how it may fit alongside the medical care and wider strategies you already have in place.

Davitt can help you understand the HBOT technology itself, the research relevant to chronic pain and fibromyalgia, hyperbaric safety, chamber and pressure options, and the practicalities of using HBOT in a clinic or at home. HBOT is not presented as a cure or a replacement for pain management or specialist care. It is explored as one potential supportive therapy within a broader, bioindividual approach to health.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does HBOT help fibromyalgia pain?

HBOT increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma. Researchers are studying whether the increased oxygen availability created under pressure may influence processes involved in fibromyalgia, including inflammation, cellular function and pain signalling. Some studies have reported improvements in symptoms, but the evidence is still developing and HBOT is used as a supportive therapy rather than a standalone treatment.

How many HBOT sessions are needed for chronic pain relief?

The number of sessions varies between people and depends on your symptoms, goals, overall health and how you respond. There is no universally established course of HBOT for fibromyalgia or chronic pain. ReWell therefore provides individual guidance based on your circumstances rather than treating HBOT as a one-size-fits-all therapy.

Is HBOT safe for people with fibromyalgia or chronic pain?

HBOT is generally well tolerated, but it is not suitable for everyone. Possible side effects can include pressure-related ear or sinus discomfort, temporary vision changes and, less commonly, other complications. Your health history and suitability should be reviewed before starting, and ReWell provides guidance and support throughout. The 2023 systematic review reported adverse events in 44 of 185 treated patients, with 12 withdrawals due to adverse reactions and no serious adverse events reported in the included studies.

Will HBOT cure fibromyalgia?

No. There is currently no cure for fibromyalgia, and HBOT is not a substitute for your existing medical care. It's used as a supportive therapy that some people incorporate alongside their broader pain management plan. Results vary, and no outcome can be guaranteed.

Where can I access HBOT for chronic pain in Ireland — at home or in a clinic?

ReWell offers both. You can access guided sessions at our Kildare or Dublin clinic, or use HBOT more regularly through a home chamber rental, delivered and installed across all 32 counties. Chamber ownership is also available for people who want long-term access at home.
