Post-Surgery & Injury Recovery

Recovery Taking Longer Than You Expected?

Whether you're recovering from surgery, an injury or a longer rehabilitation period, explore how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy may form part of your approach to healing and recovery — personally guided, in our Kildare clinic or from your own home.

Does This Sound Familiar?

When Recovery Isn't Going the Way You Hoped

Recovery isn't always a straight line. After surgery or injury, pain, swelling, limited movement and fatigue can affect everyday life — particularly when progress feels slower than you expected.

Persistent swelling
Ongoing pain
Limited mobility & stiffness
Slow-healing wounds
Fatigue during recovery
Muscle & soft-tissue injury
A longer rehabilitation
Unable to return to work or sport
Recovery is influenced by many factors, including the type and severity of your surgery or injury, your overall health, circulation, rehabilitation and medical care. HBOT isn't a replacement for these — it's a supportive therapy that may be considered alongside an appropriate recovery plan.

The Research

What Does the Research Say?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been studied across wound healing, tissue injury, surgical recovery and musculoskeletal conditions. Evidence is stronger for certain specific clinical indications than for routine recovery after surgery or injury, and findings vary according to the condition being treated, the HBOT protocol used and the outcome being measured.

2026 Systematic Review · Musculoskeletal Conditions · 612 Patients

Researchers reviewed 19 clinical studies involving 612 patients across conditions including muscle injury, ligament injury, avascular necrosis and bone marrow oedema. The most consistent findings were reported for avascular necrosis and bone marrow oedema. Evidence for ligament healing was limited, while findings for muscle recovery and tendon conditions remained inconclusive.

Important limitation: The studies covered very different conditions and HBOT protocols, and some of the non-randomised studies had significant risk of bias.

2026 Systematic Review · Plastic Surgery · 1,281 Patients

This systematic review examined 18 studies involving 1,281 patients across areas including wounds, grafts, flaps, infections and limb salvage. The researchers reported potentially favourable outcomes with HBOT in some settings. However, substantial differences between studies meant the overall findings could not establish consistent benefit across all plastic-surgery applications.

Important limitation: Most included studies were observational or case series, and high variation between studies limited how confidently the findings could be interpreted.

2024 Systematic Review · Severe Lower-Limb Soft-Tissue Injuries

Researchers reviewed evidence for HBOT used alongside standard trauma care in severe lower-limb soft-tissue injuries, including crush-associated injuries. The review examined whether adjunctive HBOT could influence complications and recovery outcomes in these serious traumatic injuries.

Important limitation: This evidence relates to severe traumatic soft-tissue injury, not ordinary muscle strains or routine post-surgical recovery, so the findings shouldn't be generalised to every injury.

What does this mean for recovery? Research supports a recognised role for HBOT in certain wound and tissue conditions, while evidence across routine post-surgical and musculoskeletal recovery remains more mixed. ReWell therefore considers HBOT as a potential adjunct to — not a replacement for — appropriate medical care and rehabilitation.

Your Guide

Your HBOT Programme, Guided by Davitt Meenaghan

Davitt is an IBUM-certified Hyperbaric Safety Officer. He founded ReWell after seeing too many people buying or renting chambers with little guidance on how to use them appropriately.

For post-surgery and injury recovery, that guidance means understanding what you're recovering from, where you are in the recovery process and what other medical or rehabilitation care you're receiving. Davitt guides how HBOT fits around your wider recovery plan, including session frequency, pressure and pacing.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How may HBOT support recovery after surgery?

HBOT increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma. Oxygen plays an important role in many of the biological processes involved in tissue repair and wound healing. HBOT has recognised medical uses for certain wound and tissue conditions, while its role following other types of surgery continues to be studied.

Can HBOT help with injuries or soft-tissue recovery?

HBOT has been studied across a range of musculoskeletal and soft-tissue conditions, but the evidence varies considerably according to the type of injury. Current research shows more consistent findings for some specific bone conditions, while evidence for muscle, tendon and ligament recovery remains limited or inconclusive.

How soon after surgery can I start HBOT?

There isn't one timeframe that's appropriate after every procedure. The type of surgery, your medical history, stage of healing and the advice of your surgical or medical team all matter. Your individual circumstances should therefore be reviewed before deciding when — or whether — HBOT is appropriate.

How many HBOT sessions will I need?

There is no universal HBOT programme for general post-surgical or injury recovery. The number and frequency of sessions depend on what you're recovering from, your stage of healing, your overall health and how you respond. ReWell therefore guides your programme around your individual circumstances rather than applying the same schedule to everyone.

Is HBOT safe after surgery or injury?

HBOT is generally well tolerated, but it isn't suitable for everyone and some medical circumstances require particular consideration. Your health history, surgery or injury and current treatment should be reviewed before starting. HBOT should complement — not replace — the care provided by your surgeon, doctor, physiotherapist or rehabilitation team.
