Does This Sound Familiar?
Running on Empty Isn't a Personal Failing
Persistent fatigue can have many different causes. Long-term stress, poor sleep, illness, demanding workloads and other physical or psychological factors can all contribute — and sometimes there isn't an obvious explanation. When even simple tasks feel overwhelming, it can affect every part of everyday life.
The Science
How HBOT May Support Energy & Recovery
Persistent fatigue can have many different causes, but at a cellular level, oxygen is fundamental to the way the body produces energy. Cells use oxygen within the mitochondria to help produce ATP — the body's primary source of usable cellular energy. The brain, muscles and other energy-demanding tissues all rely on this process to function effectively.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy significantly increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma. This creates a temporary period of increased oxygen availability throughout the body and may support some of the cellular, neurological and recovery processes relevant to fatigue.
Supports Cellular Energy Production
Oxygen is essential for mitochondrial production of ATP. HBOT significantly increases oxygen availability during treatment, potentially supporting cellular energy processes.
May Support Brain Function
The brain has particularly high energy and oxygen demands. Increased oxygen availability may support neurological and metabolic processes relevant to concentration, cognitive function and mental fatigue.
May Influence Inflammatory Processes
Persistent fatigue can occur in conditions involving inflammatory and immune-system changes. HBOT may influence inflammatory and oxidative pathways involved in some of these conditions.
Supports Recovery Processes
By increasing oxygen availability to tissues, HBOT may support normal cellular repair and recovery processes throughout the body.
The Research
What Does the Research Say?
HBOT has been studied in several conditions where persistent fatigue is a prominent symptom, including ME/CFS and Long COVID. Some studies have reported improvements in fatigue, physical function and cognitive symptoms, but the overall evidence base remains limited and protocols vary considerably.
2026 Prospective Study · ME/CFS · 30 Patients
A 2026 prospective cohort study followed 30 people with ME/CFS who received 40 HBOT sessions. Researchers reported significant improvements in physical functioning, fatigue, pain, exercise capacity, muscle strength and information-processing speed following treatment. Functional MRI changes were also observed.
Important limitation: This was a small prospective cohort study without a matched untreated ME/CFS control group for the clinical outcomes. The researchers specifically called for controlled trials to confirm effectiveness.
View the Research on PubMed →2013 Clinical Study · Chronic Fatigue Syndrome · 16 Patients
Sixteen patients diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome received 15 HBOT sessions over three weeks. Researchers reported improvements in fatigue severity and fatigue-related quality-of-life scores following treatment.
Important limitation: This was a very small study with no control group. The authors themselves concluded that larger controlled studies were required before stronger conclusions could be drawn.
View the Research on PubMed →2025 Systematic Review · Long COVID · 199 Participants
A systematic review identified seven studies involving 199 people with Long COVID. Across the included studies, improvements were reported in areas including fatigue, memory, executive function, attention and pain following HBOT.
Important limitation: The studies used different HBOT protocols, ranging from 10 to 60 sessions, and included both randomised and observational research. These findings relate specifically to Long COVID and should not be generalised to all causes of fatigue.
View the Research on PubMed →What does this mean for persistent fatigue? Early research suggests HBOT may have potential in certain conditions where fatigue is a major symptom, particularly ME/CFS and post-viral illness. However, the evidence remains developing and does not show that HBOT treats every cause of fatigue or burnout. Understanding why someone is persistently exhausted remains an important first step.
Your Guide
Your HBOT Programme, Guided by Davitt Meenaghan
Davitt is an IBUM-certified Hyperbaric Safety Officer. He founded ReWell after seeing too many people buying or renting chambers with little guidance on how to use them appropriately.
For people exploring HBOT because of persistent fatigue or reduced energy, that guidance means considering your health history, symptoms, circumstances and what you're hoping to achieve. Davitt guides session frequency, pressure and pacing around the individual, while recognising that persistent or unexplained fatigue may also require appropriate medical investigation.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can HBOT help with persistent fatigue?
HBOT is being studied in some conditions where persistent fatigue is a major symptom, including ME/CFS and Long COVID. Some studies have reported improvements in fatigue and physical function, but the evidence remains limited and developing. Whether HBOT is appropriate will depend partly on the underlying cause of your fatigue.
Is HBOT a treatment for burnout?
HBOT is not an established treatment for occupational or psychological burnout. Burnout can involve prolonged stress, sleep disruption, emotional exhaustion and other factors that HBOT does not replace the need to address. Some people may explore HBOT as part of a wider approach to wellbeing and recovery, but it shouldn't be presented as a standalone solution.
Does HBOT treat adrenal fatigue or balance cortisol?
There isn't sufficient clinical evidence to say that HBOT treats "adrenal fatigue" or restores cortisol balance. Persistent fatigue can have many causes, including recognised endocrine conditions, which require appropriate medical assessment. ReWell therefore does not use HBOT as a substitute for investigating unexplained fatigue or suspected hormonal problems.
How many HBOT sessions are needed for fatigue?
There is no universally established HBOT programme for fatigue. Research protocols vary considerably depending on the condition being studied, and the appropriate frequency and duration depend on individual circumstances and intended use. ReWell therefore guides the programme around the individual rather than promising results within a set number of sessions.
Is HBOT safe if I'm experiencing persistent fatigue?
HBOT is generally well tolerated but isn't suitable for everyone. Persistent fatigue can also be a symptom of an underlying health condition, so unexplained, severe or worsening fatigue should be medically investigated. Your health history and circumstances should be considered before starting HBOT.
Where can I access HBOT in Ireland?
ReWell offers guided HBOT sessions at our clinic in Sallins, Co. Kildare, as well as home chamber rental with delivery and installation across all 32 counties. Whether clinic sessions or home access are more suitable will depend on your circumstances and how you intend to use HBOT.
