Sports recovery research is becoming one of the more interesting areas of modern HBOT research — and recent evidence gives athletes a genuine reason to pay attention.

2025 Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis · 299 Participants

Recovery From Exercise-Induced Muscle Injury

A systematic review and meta-analysis published online in 2025 brought together 10 studies involving 299 participants.

The researchers found that HBOT was statistically effective in promoting recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury.

Importantly for competitive sport, beneficial effects were reported in subgroup analyses involving elite athletes as well as college students, and across protocols using pressures both above and at or below 2 ATA.

The analysis did not find a significant overall improvement in exercise-induced muscle soreness — showing that recovery markers and the feeling of soreness are not necessarily the same thing.

2026 Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis

Metabolic Recovery After Exercise

A further systematic review examining HBOT and athletic recovery included 11 eligible studies, with six included in the meta-analysis.

The researchers found a significant reduction in post-recovery blood lactate, supporting a potential role for HBOT in faster metabolic recovery following exercise.

Effects on short-term power and force production were more limited — another reminder that “recovery” can mean different things depending on what is being measured.
