One sprint. One awkward landing. Suddenly you're watching the match from the sideline.

For a player, the challenge isn't simply managing the pain. It's recovering properly, rebuilding strength and getting back to training without rushing the process.

Physiotherapy and structured rehabilitation remain central to recovery. But HBOT is also being explored as an adjunct to sports recovery — providing increased oxygen availability while the body carries out its natural repair processes.

At ReWell, HBOT can be used alongside your existing rehabilitation programme, with options ranging from individual clinic sessions to regular access at home.

The Science

Why Oxygen & Pressure Matter

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing oxygen inside a chamber where the atmospheric pressure is increased above normal.

Under increased pressure, more oxygen can dissolve into the blood plasma, increasing oxygen availability throughout the body. This is why researchers are investigating HBOT in areas relevant to sports and muscle recovery, including:

Tissue Oxygenation

Increasing the amount of oxygen available to tissues.

Cellular Energy

Oxygen plays an essential role in cellular energy production and the processes involved in recovery.

Inflammatory Response

Research has investigated how HBOT may influence inflammatory processes following injury and exercise.

Tissue Repair

Increased oxygen availability is also relevant to biological processes involved in tissue repair and recovery.

The important point: HBOT doesn't replace physiotherapy, progressive loading or a structured return-to-play programme. At ReWell, it is used as a potential adjunct alongside them.

The Research

What Does the Research Say About HBOT & Sports Recovery?

Research into HBOT for sports recovery is developing, and the findings are promising in some areas but not conclusive across every type of sporting injury or recovery outcome.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 10 studies and 299 participants found HBOT was associated with improved recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury, although it did not significantly improve muscle soreness.

Other research has investigated HBOT in athletes and musculoskeletal injuries, with results varying according to the type of injury, treatment protocol, pressure, number of sessions and outcomes measured. A 2026 systematic review concluded that evidence for muscle recovery remains inconclusive and that further high-quality trials are needed.

What that means for a GAA player

HBOT shouldn't be viewed as a shortcut or a guaranteed way to reduce recovery time. Instead, it may be considered as an adjunct to appropriate physiotherapy, rehabilitation, recovery and return-to-play management.

Recovery & Return to Play

Every Injury — and Every Player — Is Different

The time it takes to return to Gaelic football or hurling depends on far more than the treatment or recovery tools you use.

The location and severity of the injury, previous injuries, rehabilitation, strength, training load and individual response to recovery can all influence the timeline.

That's why ReWell doesn't promise a particular return-to-play date. Instead, Davitt works with you to understand where you are in your recovery and how HBOT could fit alongside the programme you're already following.

Already working with a physio? Perfect. HBOT is designed to sit alongside your rehabilitation — not replace it.
