Hamstring or Quad Injury? How HBOT Could Support GAA Recovery

A pulled hamstring during a sprint. A quad strain going into a tackle. That familiar tightness that appears just as you're getting back to full training.

For Gaelic footballers and hurlers, a muscle injury can derail weeks of training and leave one question at the front of your mind: how can I give my body the best possible conditions to recover?

Alongside physiotherapy, progressive rehabilitation, good nutrition and appropriate rest, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is attracting growing interest in sports recovery — and research into its effects on muscle recovery continues to develop.

At ReWell, we're seeing increasing interest in HBOT from athletes looking to support their recovery, manage demanding training schedules and get back to doing what they love.

Why Are Athletes Interested in HBOT?

Recovery places significant demands on the body.

When muscle tissue has been strained or damaged, the body begins a complex repair process involving inflammation, cellular activity, tissue remodelling and eventually the rebuilding of strength and function. Oxygen plays an important role in many of these processes.

During HBOT, you breathe oxygen inside a pressurised hyperbaric chamber. The increased pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into the blood plasma, increasing the amount of oxygen available throughout the body.

This increased oxygen availability is one of the reasons HBOT has been investigated in sports and exercise recovery, including its potential influence on muscle recovery, cellular energy, inflammatory processes and tissue repair.

For an injured player, HBOT works with the body's own recovery processes at a time when the demand for repair is high.

What Does the Research Say About HBOT & Muscle Recovery?

There is growing research examining the role of HBOT in athletic and muscle recovery.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis examining HBOT for exercise-induced muscle injury and soreness analysed 10 studies involving 299 participants. It found HBOT was associated with improved recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury, with beneficial effects observed in both college students and elite athletes. The same review did not find a significant improvement in muscle soreness.

A separate 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of athletic recovery reported that HBOT significantly reduced post-exercise blood lactate levels. However, the same review concluded that evidence for its effect on muscle recovery more broadly remains inconclusive, and called for further high-quality trials.

Individual research involving athletes with exercise-related muscular injuries has also reported reductions in muscle-injury biomarkers following a course of HBOT.

The research is genuinely encouraging in specific areas — such as recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury and lactate clearance — but mixed or inconclusive in others, including muscle soreness and broader muscle recovery outcomes. That's why we treat HBOT as a promising area to explore rather than a proven performance shortcut.

What Could This Mean for a Hamstring or Quad Injury?

Hamstrings and quadriceps are heavily loaded in Gaelic football and hurling. Sprinting, accelerating, changing direction, kicking, tackling and sudden deceleration all place significant demands on these muscle groups.

Once injured, successful recovery isn't simply about waiting for the pain to disappear. The muscle needs to repair, regain strength and tolerate progressively greater loads before returning fully to training and competition.

This is where HBOT can become part of a broader recovery strategy. By substantially increasing oxygen availability during a session, HBOT provides an environment that may support some of the physiological processes involved in recovery.

Your physiotherapy and rehabilitation still do the essential job of rebuilding movement, strength and sporting capacity. HBOT gives you another recovery tool to use alongside that work.

And at ReWell, you don't have to commit to a long programme before finding out whether HBOT is right for you.

Your Guide

Your HBOT Recovery, Guided by Davitt

One of the biggest differences at ReWell is that you're not simply booking time inside a chamber. Your HBOT journey is guided by Davitt Meenaghan, IBUM-certified Hyperbaric Safety Officer, who oversees ReWell's approach to HBOT safety, protocols and personalised support.

For an injured player, that means having someone who can talk through where you are in your recovery, your goals and how you intend to use HBOT.

Whether you choose a clinic session or regular access at home, the aim is to make HBOT work practically around your recovery — rather than giving every athlete exactly the same programme.

Can HBOT Get You Back on the Pitch Faster?

It's understandable that this is the question every injured player wants answered.

The evidence is encouraging in some specific areas — including a 2025 meta-analysis of 299 participants that found improved recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury — but it doesn't establish a specific number of days or weeks saved, and findings on muscle soreness and broader recovery outcomes have been more mixed.

A hamstring tear in one player also isn't identical to a quad strain in another. Grade of injury, previous injury history, fitness, rehabilitation and many other factors influence return-to-play.

So rather than promising a particular timeline, the better question is:

Could HBOT help create better conditions for your body to recover while you complete the rehabilitation needed to get back on the pitch? That's where we believe it is worth exploring.
