Significant Improvements Across Multiple Cognitive Areas

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis examined HBOT for neurocognitive deficits following traumatic brain injury.

Across four studies involving 250 patients, the researchers reported significant improvements across several neurocognitive domains.

2026 Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis · 570 Participants

A Larger Analysis Adds to the Picture

A newer 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis brought together eight randomised studies involving 570 participants with traumatic brain injury.

The analysis found significant benefits in several specific areas, including computerised cognitive performance, executive function and processing speed, memory function and sleep quality.

The evidence was strongest in populations with mild traumatic brain injury. Not every outcome measured showed a significant benefit — PTSD symptoms, broader neurobehavioural symptoms and emotional distress, for example, did not show clear significant improvements in the pooled analysis.

That makes the findings particularly useful: rather than suggesting HBOT affects every symptom associated with TBI, the research is beginning to identify which neurological and cognitive domains may be most responsive.
