Question 1

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Accepted Answer

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing oxygen in a pressurised chamber. The increased pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into the blood and tissues, and HBOT is used and studied in a range of medical, recovery and wellness settings.

Question 2

What conditions and recovery goals is HBOT used for?

Accepted Answer

HBOT is used or studied in a range of settings including injury and post-surgical recovery, concussion and brain injury, neurological recovery, chronic pain, Long COVID and post-viral fatigue, inflammation, athletic recovery and general wellbeing. The evidence and suitability of HBOT vary depending on the condition and individual circumstances.

Question 3

Is HBOT safe?

Accepted Answer

HBOT is generally well tolerated when it is used appropriately, but it is not suitable for everyone. Chamber type, pressure, health history and individual circumstances all need to be considered. ReWell provides guidance on safe chamber use and can help you understand which HBOT option may be appropriate for you.

Question 4

What happens during an HBOT session?

Accepted Answer

During an HBOT session you sit or lie inside a hyperbaric chamber while the chamber is gradually pressurised. ReWell clinic sessions are available in 60 and 90-minute options, depending on the service selected.

Question 5

How many HBOT sessions might I need?

Accepted Answer

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, circumstances and the reason you are considering HBOT. Some people use HBOT for a small number of recovery sessions, while longer-term or neurological programmes may involve 20, 40 or more sessions. Home programmes may also allow regular use over a period of several weeks or months.

Question 6

Is HBOT covered by health insurance in Ireland?

Accepted Answer

Health insurance cover for HBOT varies by insurer, policy and reason for treatment. We recommend checking directly with your health insurer to confirm whether any cover or reimbursement is available. ReWell offers individual clinic sessions, session packages and home chamber rental options.

Question 9

Is home HBOT the same as clinic HBOT?

Accepted Answer

We can help you understand which option may be most appropriate for your circumstances.
