The Science
Why Is HBOT Being Studied in Healthy Ageing?
HBOT does much more than temporarily deliver additional oxygen.
Increased atmospheric pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve directly into blood plasma, creating a substantial increase in oxygen availability during treatment.
Repeated exposure also triggers a series of biological signalling responses — and it is these wider effects that make HBOT particularly interesting to researchers studying ageing and recovery.

Vascular Function
HBOT research includes effects on blood-vessel formation, endothelial function and vascular signalling — processes relevant to how tissues receive oxygen and nutrients.
Cellular Signalling
Hyperoxic exposure influences reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that act as signalling molecules and can trigger downstream biological responses.
Tissue Repair
HBOT has established effects relevant to tissue repair, including growth-factor signalling and angiogenesis.
Brain & Cognition
Human research in older adults has explored whether repeated HBOT may influence cerebral blood flow and cognitive performance.
These effects provide a biological reason to investigate HBOT in ageing. They are not, by themselves, proof that HBOT extends lifespan.
The Human Research
What Has Actually Been Studied in Healthy Older Adults?
This is where the longevity conversation becomes particularly interesting.
HBOT research is not limited to animal models or people recovering from illness. A small number of human studies have specifically investigated healthy older adults.
Randomised Controlled Trial · 63 Healthy Adults Aged 64+
Cognition & Cerebral Blood Flow
A randomised controlled trial investigated the effect of HBOT on cognitive function in healthy ageing adults.
Sixty-three independently living adults over 64 were randomised to either HBOT or a control group over a three-month period.
Following HBOT, researchers reported a significant improvement in global cognitive function compared with the control group.
Perfusion MRI also showed increased cerebral blood flow in several brain regions in the HBOT group.
This does not establish HBOT as a treatment for cognitive ageing, but it provides direct human evidence that repeated hyperbaric exposure can influence measurable cognitive and cerebral blood-flow outcomes in healthy older adults.

Telomeres & Senescent Immune Cells
Another prospective trial looked at two biological features strongly associated with ageing: telomere length and cellular senescence.
Thirty-five healthy, independently living adults aged 64 and over completed a protocol involving 60 daily HBOT exposures.
Researchers reported increases of more than 20% in telomere length in several immune-cell populations following the intervention, alongside reductions in some senescent-cell populations.
These findings attracted considerable attention because telomere shortening and cellular senescence are recognised features of biological ageing.
But there is an important distinction: changing a biological marker associated with ageing is not the same as proving that an intervention reverses ageing or extends human lifespan.

Vascular Health
Why Blood Vessels Matter as We Age
Healthy ageing depends in part on a vascular system capable of delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.
The endothelium — the layer of cells lining our blood vessels — plays an important role in vascular function and cardiovascular health.
A recent review of HBOT and cardiovascular health examined emerging evidence around endothelial function, vascular homeostasis, angiogenesis, antioxidant defences, inflammation and cardiovascular risk factors.
Angiogenesis is particularly relevant. HBOT has been shown to stimulate processes involved in the formation of new blood vessels, an established part of its biological effects in tissue repair.
That does not mean HBOT prevents cardiovascular ageing. It does explain why vascular function has become another important part of the healthy-ageing research conversation.

Putting the Research in Context
Does This Mean HBOT “Reverses Ageing”?
No — and we don't need that claim for the research to be interesting.
Human studies have reported changes in cognition, cerebral blood flow, telomere length and cellular senescence following specific repeated HBOT protocols in healthy older adults.
Separate research describes effects relevant to angiogenesis, vascular function, cellular signalling, inflammatory processes and tissue repair.
That creates a credible and expanding research field around HBOT and healthy ageing.
What has not been demonstrated is that HBOT makes people biologically younger in every meaningful sense, prevents ageing or extends human lifespan.
The better question is whether some of the physiological responses to HBOT may eventually prove useful in protecting aspects of healthspan — and that is a question researchers are actively exploring.

The Bigger Picture
Where Does HBOT Fit in a Longevity Strategy?
Technology can be exciting. But healthy ageing still begins with fundamentals.
The biggest longevity opportunity is not finding one machine, supplement or protocol that replaces everything else.
It is building a strong foundation — and then deciding which additional strategies genuinely deserve a place above it.
HBOT may sit above those foundations as a targeted technology for people interested in recovery, oxygenation, brain health and emerging healthy-ageing research.
That is very different from assuming that more chamber sessions automatically equal greater longevity.

Is HBOT an anti-ageing treatment?
HBOT is being studied in areas relevant to healthy ageing, but it has not been proven to stop ageing or extend human lifespan. Human studies have reported changes in cognition, cerebral blood flow and selected cellular markers associated with ageing after specific repeated HBOT protocols.
Has HBOT been studied in healthy older adults?
Yes. Human research includes a randomised controlled trial of 63 healthy adults over 64 that reported improvements in global cognitive function, particularly attention and processing speed, alongside increases in cerebral blood flow. Other prospective research has examined telomere length and cellular senescence.
Does HBOT improve brain function as we age?
One randomised controlled trial in healthy older adults reported improvements in global cognitive function after a three-month HBOT protocol, with particularly strong changes in attention and information-processing speed. Perfusion MRI also showed increased cerebral blood flow in several brain regions.
Does HBOT lengthen telomeres?
A prospective study of 35 healthy adults aged 64 and over reported increases of more than 20% in telomere length in several immune-cell populations after a 60-session HBOT protocol. This is an interesting biological finding, but it does not demonstrate that HBOT reverses ageing or extends lifespan.
Why is vascular health relevant to longevity?

HBOT is not a shortcut to immortality, and it does not need to be.
What makes the research interesting is that repeated hyperbaric oxygen exposure can influence oxygen availability, vascular responses, cellular signalling and tissue repair — while human healthy-ageing studies have also reported changes in cognition, cerebral blood flow and selected biological markers associated with ageing.
We still need larger studies, independent replication and longer-term research to understand what those changes ultimately mean for healthspan.
But there is enough here for HBOT to deserve a place in the serious conversation around healthy ageing — particularly when it is considered as part of a wider strategy rather than sold as a miracle anti-ageing treatment.
The goal isn't simply more years. It's more years with the strength, clarity and independence to keep living well.
